Snaptu – or how to turn a normal mobile phone into a Smartphone – yes, really…

The synchronicity of stuff I stumble into, never ceases to amaze me:

So, in a fit of Christmas boredom, I call my mobile providerimage (Virgin) and tell them that although they are very nice people and Trowbridge is probably the centre of the Universe, for what I am now paying them, I could get double from Tesco Mobile. The (nice) Virgin chap says (that for no additional fee) he’ll give me zillions of minutes, 3000 texts (that’s 2,999 more than I need …) and 1GB of internet data per month. Given that I currently use a non 3G Nokia 6230i – the best phone ever produced (before Nokia completely lost the plot), 1GB of data per month will also be about as useful as a, well, not very useful thing…

The next I know it, up pops this chap from snaptu on BBC News image24 – (which is sort of like a rolling version of John Craven’s NewsRound – for those who have yet to venture up into the higher Freeview channels where CBeebies lives) demonstrating how he has created a business that can turn a normal mobile phone into a Smartphone – and after a bit or experimentation, I have to agree, that he can!

Snaptu has Facebook, Linkedin, The Guardian Newspaper, twitter, London Tube updates and all sorts of stuff.  Quite brilliant.

If you have a data plan and a phone that can at least run Java apps, check out snaptu – it will surprise you.

[To Install on your phone:
Browse to www.snaptu.com from your phones browser – and if, like on the Nokia, the browser complains about Frames - from the phone, browse to www.opera.com and install Opera Mini as the web browser from which to access and install snaptu]
